Using your HSA or FSA for yoga

How to get reimbursed by your HSA or FSA for yoga

simple process

You can likely be reimbursed

Yoga has demonstrated clinical benefit in hypertension, chronic pain, arthritis, among other conditions. The standard for reimbursement is "medical necessity," which has a broader meaning than you might think, and includes health practices necessary to treat or prevent a medical condition or disease.

  • Check Your Benefits

The first step is to ask your HSA, FSA, or other employer-administered program benefits coordinator what type of documentation is required for reimbursement. We share more on this in step three.

  • Visit your Doctor

The second step is to establish care with a primary doctor, which is good for a whole host of reasons.

  • Document Your Health

Then, obtain or maintain supporting documentation for how your yoga practice relates to a specific condition. Some HSA, FSA, or employer-administered programs do not require any documentation. Others will require receipts. Still others will require you to provide a Letter of Medical Necessity from your doctor. Either way, it may be wise to have a letter of medical necessity on hand in the event that your expense reimbursements get audited.
